Method of Valentin Tszin is based on 4 components:

Valentin_Tzin1. Work with the physical body.
Warm-up exercises (joints, muscles, skeleton); exercises to strengthen the body centre, feeling of the periphery and their interactions; strengthening and relaxation, balance.
Techniques: combination of taekwondo, butoh and rhythmics.

2. Work with the conscious body.
Exercises of refusal of actions. Research of body polyphony: numerous variants of behaviour in the same situation. Sensation of individual patterns. Biomechanics. Metronome.
Based on drama and acting theatre techniques and Meyerhold’s biomechanics.

3. Work with the bodies in a group.
Improvisation on a given topic. Research of boundaries of oneself and the other. Construction and deconstruction of hierarchy of bodies in space. Modelling simple and complex schemes “presence – perception”.
We will use the theory of contemporary philosophers and sociologists.

4. Work with composition and dramaturgy.
Theory about existing strategies of creation of a public action (performance). Depending on the course, we will develop solo and/or group actions.

Basic keys: Stanislavsky, Meyerhold, Artaud, Hijikata, Brecht

“Alienation”, so Valentin Tszin marks his artistic method of not only creation of a performance, but also the philosophical approach to understanding of oneself in the contemporary world and its discourses.

“Alien”, it’s not a metaphor on a person who escaped from real civilization into non-real dimension of his art, on the contrary, it’s a meeting of a human being with a human being, in a situation of one-on-one in real time and space of action. Moreover, this is interaction of present and perceived in the dynamics of the birth of the third, the “Other”, perhaps someone else in the future.

All interested in the body as a tool of art are welcome. Minimum physical preparation is needed. Theater/dance background not mandatory.

The winter-autumn workshop series in 2016 are aimed at a creation of a group of artists for future research, actions and productions.

Valentin Tszin is a Russian choreographer, dancer and actor. Founder of PoemaTheatre (St. Petersburg / Moscow) and Butoh Village (Moscow) and co-founder of Butoh Channel Berlin.

Valentin has presented his work nationally and internationally in the Ukraine, Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, Colombia, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, France, Scotland, Poland, Russia and Greece. He has produced and participated in numerous performance and collaborative projects, including “Out of the Forest” ARCHSTOYANIE Festival (Nikola-Lenivets, Russia 2013), “Ka te T’ui” gogolfest (Kiev, Ukraine) “Dostoevsky. The corpse.” (Tokyo, Japan 2014), “Infant Melee I and II” with Yuko Kaseki (Berlin, Germany 2014), “eX…it!” 6th international Butoh dance-eXchange and performance festival (Schloss Broellin, Germany) , “RopeBerry” and “Instincts” Lieber Null Berlin.

Valentin studied and worked with Butoh Masters Carlotta Ikeda, and Ko Murobushi, Dairakudakan, also Flavia Ghisalberti, Ken Mai, Taketeru Kudo, singer Sainko Namchylak and many others.

Valentin’s biography itself contains the dynamics giving birth to the principles that drive him it at the moment. Basic education as a drama theater and film actor, and broad work experience in Russian theater and cinema, provided Valentin a set of basic techniques, where the actor is the conductor of the role, the plot, the author or the other source, that could be even a politician or an ideology. Before entering the acting school Valentin got a degree of a Taekwondo Master that granted him not only the basic physical skills of mastering the body, but the basic patterns of discipline and hierarchical understanding of the world.

Much later, after abandoning his actor career in theater and cinema, Valentin became interested in the post-modernist theories of understanding the world and creation of art. Physical theater and butoh gave the main keys to creating his first personal system of teaching and work on oneself. That method, called “theatre of the body semiotics”, where the main driving component was comprehension of own body as a set of codes, re-coding of which leads to the creation of “another world”, was realised in his Russian company PoemaTheatre, created in 2009 in collaboration with other contemporary Russian artists. Since then, Valentin tours extensively around the world and cooperates with many modern experimenters.

Curious about, denying any kind of dominance in art as a protest against the system of “art as a tool of power,” Valentin himself became dictator of his own project.

Since the beginning of 2015 Valentin lives in Berlin. Currently he is a student of a Master’s Program HZT-Berlin (UDK).

Being a part of the neo-liberal European context of contemporary philosophy and art, Valentin wonders again about the artist as an out-personal space of the world and his impact on the construction of the future post-machine world.
